How We Approach GI Surgery
Our surgical gastroenterology team performs laparoscopic, robotic and open surgery for the digestive system at the main hospital, from hernia and appendix to colorectal, bariatric and cancer surgery.
Being told you may need an operation can be worrying. Many surgical conditions - a hernia, piles or a polyp - are common, and the treatment is well established. Others, such as appendicitis or a trapped hernia, need prompt care, and some, such as cancer or severe obesity, need careful planning over several visits.
Whatever the condition, the surgeon explains what is wrong, whether surgery is needed and which approach suits you. Simpler treatments are tried where they can work, and when an operation is advised you are told what it involves and what recovery usually looks like.

Not sure which condition it is?
Start with a consultation - the doctor will explain what is most likely going on and which tests, if any, you need.
This information is general and is not a diagnosis. Please see a doctor about your own symptoms.
Your First Visit for GI Surgery
- Before your visit.
Bring your previous reports, scans and a list of your medicines, including any blood thinners or diabetes tablets.
- At the consultation.
The surgeon asks about your symptoms, examines you and explains what is most likely going on.
- If tests are needed.
You are told which tests, why and how to prepare. Tests and operations are done at our main hospital in Adajan.
- Your plan.
If surgery is advised, the operation, the approach and the recovery are explained before you decide, with follow-up at Adajan or the OPD nearest you.
When Is a Surgical Problem Urgent?
Severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, or a cold, pale or painful limb may need urgent assessment. Do not wait for an online appointment — call the hospital or go to the nearest emergency department.
